Fb confirms searches performed off the system do not influence Facebook search results

Facebook confirmed this week that queries off of the platform do not influence Fb search results. Aiming to be more transparent about how exactly Facebook’ s search graph functions, product manager Yee Lee explained all the things that do — and don’ t — impact Facebook queries in a blog post Friday.

Factors that influence Fb search results. According to Shelter, Facebook search results are guided with an user’ s behavior on the system: from posts shared by Close friends, Pages they follow, Facebook Organizations they belong to, events they’ ve liked or followed and any content they’ ve interacted along with within the News Feed. Search can also be influenced by information an user gives with Facebook, including profile information, places they’ ve tagged plus previous searches they’ ve carried out on the app.

“ Facebook search results are also based on common Facebook community activity, including the recognition of whatever you’ re looking for and how recently it was posted, ” writes Lee.

Fb says it ranks search results depending on an user’ s activity plus their community.

If it didn’ t happen upon Facebook, it doesn’ t issue. While every activity an user may take on platform may influence a Facebook search, the organization reports that any searches carried out off the platform will not impact Fb search results.

“ We would like to be more transparent about what happens when a person search for content on Facebook. To help set the stage, we all created a video to help the people who have use Facebook understand the fundamentals showing how it works — most importantly, that while search engine results are influenced by people’ s i9000 activity on Facebook, they’ lso are not influenced by searches carried out off of Facebook, ” writes Shelter.

Facebook’ h “ Privacy” boilerplate. “ Privacy is taken quite seriously at Facebook, ” states Lee in the video. The the organization has spent the last eight several weeks apologizing for failing to safeguard consumer data and keep it out of the fingers of bad actors during the prior two years.

Lee reviews an user’ s posts will simply surface in search results for people they’ re connected to: “ Things that a person share with your friends will only end up in the particular search results for those friends. ”

Why you should care. Unlike traditional search engines like Google plus Bing, there are not specific activities a company can take to improve visibility within Facebook search. Not surprising, Facebook states it’ s in a business’ greatest interest to stay engaged and participating in the platform for a better chance of appearing in Facebook search results.
