Fb ends Trending section & gets rid of all products that integrated using the Trends API

Facebook is removing the Trending news topic section beginning next week, along with products and third-party integrations that rely on the Trends API.

According to Facebook’ t research, people found it to become less useful over time — as well as the company said that content in the Well-known topics section accounted for fewer than one 5 percent of clicks to information publishers on average.

“ We’ ve seen that the method people consume news on Fb is changing to be primarily upon mobile and increasingly through information video. So we’ re discovering new ways to help people stay knowledgeable about timely, breaking news that will matters to them, while making sure this news they see on Facebook is definitely from trustworthy and quality resources, ” writes Facebook’ s mind of news products, Alex Hardiman, on Facebook’ s news blog .

The site says it is discovering new ways to surface news in order to users, referencing the “ Breaking News” brand for news headlines,   and says it is testing the “ Today In” section that will pull the latest breaking news through local publishers, officials and businesses.

Facebook also referenced the devoted section in Watch for news movie coverage : “ Where individuals can view live coverage, every day news briefings and weekly deeply dives that are exclusive to Watch. ”

Facebook’ s Well-known section, released in 2014 , was designed in order to surface relevant news content through across the platform. In 2016, the website was offender of curating politically biased information ,   which resulted in Facebook altering the way in which news appeared in the Trending subjects section — eliminating story descriptions to show only the subject and number of mentions.
